Comments: Arnold Bennett was an amazingly prolific writer. Not only did he produce 34 novels, he wrote short stories, successful plays and later silent movie scripts, popular self-help books, was an active journalist, and even briefly ran the British Ministry of Information during World War I. He was one of the best selling authors of the late 19th/early 20th century. His reputation declined after his death in 1935 but has been reevaluated in recent years. Yet this book, "The Old Wives' Tale," originally published in 1908, which follows the lives of two very different sisters from their youth into old age, has always been considered one of his very best works, even by his critics. This is a particularly lovely edition, and in excellent condition. The cover has a floral pattern reminiscent of William Morris. There are full-page color drawings throughout, as well as half-page black-and-white drawings at the beginning of every chapter. The text block is tight and there are no marks, creases, or tears on the pages. The only damage is slight, where what appears to have been a book plate was removed from the inside of the back cover. There is a bit of confusion within the industry about the copyright date: The Heritage Press was originally created as the Limited Editions Club by George Macy to produce fine editions of reprints of classic works. By the time this work was published, Macy had dropped the "limited editions" part of its remit and changed the imprint's name but the fineness of the books it published remained. The book itself says the Macy copyrighted the book in 1940, but the Library of Congress, acknowledging that in its catalog, says the Heritage Press published it in1947. Regardless, you can be assured of getting a distinguished copy with this book. See our photos.

Comments: The classic Greek play, in a wonderfully elegant edition (as The Heritage Press consistently produces), and a copy that appears to be new. The Greek text appears on the verso pages with an English verse translation by Francis Storr on the facing recto pages. Two-tone wood engravings, some full-page, that both illustrated specific characters and incidents from the play and more general classical themes, are scattered throughout. An essay by American playwright Thornton Wilder introduces the whole thing. There is no copyright in the book itself or even in its Library of Congress catalog entry, but the original illustrations by Demetrios Galanis, archived at the University of Texas, are dated 1955. The Heritage Press appears to have released several different editions of "Oedipus the King"--this one has a black cloth binding with a rectangular gilt embossed image of two facing Greek (not Egyptian) sphinxes in a gold slipcase. This is the by far the best copy we've seen on the market. See our photos.

Comments: This book is a charming introduction to "The Saying of the Fathers," known in Hebrew as Pirkei Avot. Organized by the famous quote, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?" by Rabbi Hillel, the text is sectioned into segments on internal values, such as the value of life, study, and knowledge, and interpersonal values, such as the value of government, argument, and community. Each chapter is filled with proverbs and quotes from the ancient rabbis and interpretations to provide an understanding of their wisdom. What makes this book truly special are the beautiful color illustrations by New York painter Erika Weihs. Known for her illustrations and exhibits in the Whitney Museum and Carnegie Institute, she provides wonderful visual depictions of the values described in the book, making this a truly unique and lovely volume.

Includes an original Japanese Tuttle (the publisher) purchase receipt. Very little reference work on snuff bottles existed when Henry Hitt put together his first and second (1945) privately printed editions of this text and one supplement. This first edition of the 1978 Tuttle publication brings together both original editions plus the supplement. Essentially, this work was republished by Tuttle so as not to lose Hitt's otherwise-unavailable original, scholarly work. Well illustrated (see photos) throughout and reprinted as written by Hitt. One beautiful color tipped-in image in front.

Comments: This tome, billing itself as "the definitive practical guide to gardening techniques, planning, and maintenance" lives up to its name both in its encyclopedic nature and in its definitiveness. Part 2 covers tools, equipment, greenhouses, climate, soils and fertilizers, propagation, and more, as well as a list of possible plant problems and how to control them. Comments: A fascinating book from the world of model collecting, this book is what it says on the tin: photos and descriptions of every sport, prototype, 250GT, and GTO 1/43 scale model Ferrari. The book is organized chronologically according to the racing history of real Ferrari cars, and so it provides an interesting history of the cars themselves. Arranged by year, from 1947 to 1975 and beyond, the introduction to each year includes racing successes and engine specifications from that year. Then the models are depicted and described, including info on their manufacture and sale. The model cars are delightful to look at, and this book is sure to capture the fancy of any Ferrari lover, model car collector, or individual interested in learning about model collecting.

Comments: Beloved craft writer Leslie Linsley, who has published over 70 books on crafts, outdoes herself in this wonderful book on afghans. The "rainbow" in the title does not refer to afghans of 7 different colors, as each of the nearly 30 projects in this book can be made with whichever color the artist chooses. The book helps with the choice, by providing color illustrations of how each pattern would look with a few different color schemes. The book begins with over 30 pages of basics on both knitting and crocheting, introducing the beginner crafter to techniques, vocabulary, and helpful tips. Then come the projects: from the traditional Patchwork to the pretty White Aran to the striped and textured Jewel Lap Blanket. Each pattern is more beautiful than the last, and Linsley's instructions are easy and fun to follow.

Comments: This is such a fun knitting book! "New directions" refer to the unusual knitting techniques in this book's sweater patterns - rather than starting at the waist and knitting to the shoulders, these sweaters can be knit diagonally or cuff to cuff, or shoulders down. The patterns come in 4 sections: "Weekend in the Country," featuring patterns like Halloween Fun Sweater and Cuff-to-Cuff Kid; "A Beach Holiday," featuring selections such as Chevron Lace Top and the fashionable Amigo Top; "A Mountain Sojourn" with offerings like Side-to-Side Lace Sweater and A Touch of Norway, a colorful introduction to Nordic Knitting; and "Life in the City," with patterns like the Contrapposto Symphony Sweater and City Evening Jacket. Interestingly, The Country Diary, from which this Postcard book is derived, was not published until 1977, fifty-seven years after her death. It became an international best seller, with Britain's Sunday Times naming it in 2024 as one of "top 100 best-selling books of the last 50 years." (It was #12.) For framing, crafting, or memorable correspondence. "The beauty of the illustrations of British flora and fauna by Edith Holden is timeless."

This well-crafted guide covers many of the abc's (sorry, couldn't help myself....) of children's book collecting. First, it provides the basics - condition, dust jackets, how to navigate the online, dealer, and book fair venues. The chapters are chronological, but also included are full chapters on the superstar authors and illustrators in this domain: Garth Williams, Dr. Seuss, and Maurice Sendak. The complete lists of Newberry Medal winners (author's award) and the Caldecott Medal winners (illustrator's award) are also included. The authors, noted antique expert Noah Fleisher and his wife Lauren Zittle, a serious collector, have also added in a few lists of their favorites. One last comment - how many books on children's literature do I have? Well, I've lost count - but I had to have a copy of this one, too. Well worth having!

This handsome, well-made volume has an interesting backstory. Lakeside Press, founded in 1864, has long prided itself on producing high quality publications. Earlier in its history, Lakeside was a publisher of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, the Sears catalog, Time, and Life. Lakeside Classics, of which this volume is one, is a series began in 1903 to reprint neglected classics, particularly those based on American history. By 2015, there were 113 volumes. The most interesting fact about Lakeside Classics is that they were never sold! The current year's volume was/is given to employees and friends of the publishing house each year at Christmas. Due to their quality and their origin, Lakeside Classics are collectible. This work is #87 in the series, and includes two memoirs of westward expansion: the first is by Applegate, an American pioneer who led a large group of settlers to Oregon (and established an alternate route) and later became an influential member of Oregon's early government; the second memoir by Porter describes her and her husband's two thousand mile journey from Missouri to California; neither of them had any relevant experience to prepare them for such a trek, and she was pregnant with their second child. Quite the treatise on American perseverance.

A necessary reference for any devotee of the Arts and Crafts movement. Charles Francis Annesley Voysey was a leading designer in the Arts and Crafts movement. Not only an architect, Voysey was also a furniture and textile designer of wallpaper, fabrics, and furnishings in the Arts and Crafts style. Karen Livingstone, the author, is a curator and Head of Projects at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and is well published in the Arts and Crafts domain. The publisher tells us, "“Perhaps the most recognized and influential designer of his age, Voysey designed over one hundred bookplates, badges and greetings cards. The focus of the book is the collection of these designs from Voysey's own personal archive. Only a very few of these designs have been published to date, and never as a completed collection. Beautiful to look at and full of interesting symbolism, each design encapsulates the spirit and underlying principles which informed every aspect of Voysey's architecture and decorative design. They also form the centrepiece of a beautifully illustrated tale about the life and work of Voysey, touching on his personality, interests, relationship with family and clients, and his central role as designer of the Arts and Crafts Movement.”

This handsome, impressive book covers New Mexico art from prehistory to the present. The author Traugott is the curator of 20th century art at the Museum of New Mexico, and this book accompanied the 2012 museum exhibition. The 250+ works of art span a staggering 14,000 years, from the Paleo-Indian Clovis people to through the 20th century greats. Only a museum could mount such an impressive exhibition. Chapters include art of hunters, gatherers, and early agriculturalists, art of ancestral Pueblo villages, art of Spanish entrada to the Mexican Republic , American colonialism in New Mexico, artist fraternities after New Mexico statehood, Roaring Twenties to World War II, mainstreaming New Mexico art, and the changing artistic landscape. by John Buchan
This book has such an unusual back story, is such "a ripping good yarn," its author was such a fascinating figure, and this edition is so handsome, that it would make a magnificent gift for a spy thriller or war story fan - but only if you can part with it. Let's start with the author: John Buchan was an Oxford-educated Scottish writer, historian, and politician. As a writer, he is best known for Thirty-Nine Steps, a WWI spy thriller published in 1915. An influential, well-regarded public figure, and he was appointed as Governor General of Canada in 1935 and elevated to the peerage as Baron Tweedsmuir. (Thirty-Nine Steps was also adapted for the screen in 1935 by Hitchcock.) He had always been known for his personal integrity, and he took his duties as Governor General very seriously, traveling the length and breath of Canada, including the Arctic, and he advocated that the strongest nations were those made up of different ethnicities - a highly progressive view for its time. Thirty-Nine Steps introduced Richard Hannay, his protagonist, who works for the British Foreign Office. Greenmantle is the second book featuring Hannay, although it is not a sequel but a stand-alone novel. Greenmantle is lauded as a "cracking WWI story" and a "ripping yarn." Scroll through the reviews in GoodReads - it is near universally praised for its characters, insight into WWI history, adventure, and suspense - you can't put it down. But as many have noted - another fascinating feature of this book is that is was written during WWI - not after - when the outcomes and subsequent events of the Great War were still unknown, so the book functions as something of an alternate history. It also has perhaps the only fictional account of the Russian front, which is portrayed sympathetically. This backstory is one of the reasons we love antiquarian books so much. Instead of a new pot-boiler, churned out by the dozens in writing "factories" under a best-selling author's name (you know who we are talking about), we have a novel authored by a fascinating historical figure in his own right, we are reading contemporaneous historical details of the Front, and the author can actually write!

Exquisite reproduction of Thaxter and Hassam’s original 1894 publication, with a new introduction by Allen Lacy. Thaxter was a popular and respected poet, essayist, and journalist of the late 19th century who spent her life, from childhood, among the New England literati, mostly in the community that gathered around her father’s hotel on Appledore Island off the coast of Maine. By the time she took over the hotel, the community had expanded to include artists like Hassam, one of America’s premier impressionist painters, who produced some of his best work in her flower garden. This is their collaboration, full of lyrical prose and practical gardening advice and bursting with Hassam’s watercolors, not to mention the classic arts-and-crafts green-and-gold binding.

Yes, there are some glamorous and even sexy pictures in this handbook, but more importantly, it answers the questions real women have about lingerie but seldom have a way of asking, like, “Does this fit?” or “How do I get that look?” or “That can’t possibly be comfortable…can it?” The Lingerie Handbook is as much a reference book and a shopping and care guide as anything else, amply illustrated and full of do’s and dont’s for all kinds of “underpinnings” and sleepwear. It even has sections specifically for men.

A book for antique firearms collectors that was so well regarded when it came out that it was reviewed in an academic, not layperson’s, journal (The Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research). Current reviews call it a thorough and useful introduction to gunsmithing for these collectors, even going so far as helping them build their work bench and tools that may no longer be available for such rare weapons. Comments: This sumptuous art history book explores fine arts and decorative arts focused on the subject of tea. After presenting a history of tea, the book moves into decorative arts, detailing a myriad of mediums: teacups and saucers; tea tables, kettles, and stands; tea boxes and canisters; tea linens; tea spoons; and much more. The book next discusses fine arts, highlighting tea-related paintings such as still lifes and eighteenth century domestic portraits. The book concludes with a tea glossary, recipes for tea cakes, and a directory of traditional tea events. Over 330 glossy, full-color images depicting the decorative and fine arts described. A comprehensive and fascinating work.

Comments: A fascinating and bemusing look into Victorian health practices. Dr. Thomas Allinson (1858-1918) was a doctor, writer, businessman, and proponent of vegetarianism and women's rights. In this work, Anna Selby compiles his writing, providing a look into Victorian advice, health culture, and cooking. The book features nearly 200 pages of Victorian-era advice from Allinson, who professes to keep a non-flesh diet, abstain from alcoholic drinks, tobacco, and coffee, and rise between 7 and 8 am every day and take a walk before breakfast, "no matter how cold, wet or foggy." Containing everything from Allinson's thoughts on tea ("tea drinking is injurious and should never be indulged in; all are best without it") to his essay on "How to Become Beautiful and Attractive," the book offers insights into health advocacy of another era. Also included are over 110 Victorian-era recipes, such as Almond Pudding and Cucumber salad.

Comments: This book contains a fascinating artifact of the Shaker movement, the American religious movement formed during the 18th century. As a child, the author and his father were friends with members of one of the last remaining Shaker communities. They were gifted a notebook full of recipes by one woman, Sister Jennie. The recipes are "plain and wholesome," as Sister Jennie described them, and appear in her original handwriting, alongside versions with modern ingredients and measurements. Students of food and culinary history will be fascinated by the processes that went into interpreting the Shaker recipes for a modern kitchen, and the cook book collector will find this a volume like no other.

Comments: Scarce. Elton John's almost 60-year music career, and his reign as one of the most successful artists of all time, first began when he met his songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, in 1967. Bernie Taupin's lyrics facilitated Elton John's meteoric rise, and the partnership between the two continues even today. Elton John was at his most successful between 1970 and 1976, and this 1971 book features many musings from cultural critics about his brilliance as a songwriter and performer, very early in his rise to fame. The book contains 30 pages of biographical information in the form of quotes from Elton John, Bernie Taupin, and contemporary cultural critics, as well as historical black-and-white photographs. It also contains over 100 pages of sheet music, featuring many of their early songwriting accomplishments. A fascinating find from very early in Elton John's career.

Comments: A beautiful book. Ostensibly a recipe collection, the work actually details the story of the gorgeous Monteriggioni region of Tuscany. The authors write, "This collection does not aim to be just a cookery book but more a message, a memory, a journey in time," and indeed the stories in its pages transport the reader back to old Tuscany. The recipes and stories are accompanied by lovely watercolor illustrations evoking the beauty of the historic Tuscan region. This book, with its charming illustrations and evocations of the past, is an excellent example of what we hope for in a gift book.

Comments: Dr. Seuss, the famed children's book author and illustrator known for some of the most famous children's books of all time ("The Cat In The Hat," "Horton Hears a Who," "The Lorax," etc.) published this book on his 82nd birthday. Directing the book toward "obsolete children," his pejorative term for adults, Dr. Seuss uses his classic rhyming and whimsical illustration style to bemoan the experience of getting older and being subjected to endless medical treatments. Dr. Seuss' delightful illustrations of absurd hospital contraptions and departments such as "Optoglymics," "Dermoglymics," and "Nooronetics" will have you laughing right along.

The book features 16 pages of black-and-white photographs of the Reagans, dating from 1927 to 1980.

Comments: Scarce in first edition hardcover. Muensterberger was a practicing psychoanalyst and expert in ethnographic art. He believed that, together, his psychoanalytic and anthropological work would lead to a "deeper comprehension of the essential nature of man." This work is purported to be the first psychological examination of the emotional sources of the drive to collect. After two chapters on the antecedents of the passion for collecting, Muensterberger treats us to discussions ranging across the greats of collectors, including Petrarch, Catherine the Great, and Sir Thomas Phillipps, who clearly stated that he wanted one copy of every book in the world (a book collection that has resulted in over 60 sales by Sotheby's over the years). From the book jacket: "In an easy conversational style, the author discusses the eccentricities of heads of state, literary figures, artists, and psychoanalytic patients, all possessed by a need for magic relief from despair and helplessness - and for the self-healing implied in the phrase "I can't live without it!" Now there is a sentiment many of us can relate to. Condition of the book is fine. The dust jacket is near fine due to a very minor shelf ware (no tears or markings) and a small blemish on the inside only, which is not apparent on the outer jacket. See our photos. Delivered in a protective archival mylar cover.
