Colorful pages introduce each section and provide a short description of each song, explaining the legend behind Carol of the Bells and telling the story of Bing Crosby's I'll Be Home for Christmas being broadcast into outer space in 1965. The sheet music for each song is accompanied by a stylized title and illustration, making the book fun for onlookers as the songs are played. In the story, Ilana learns about her grandmother's childhood, and talk about historical examples of Jewish exodus. The chapter on Yom Kippur discusses the meaning of Prayer: Talking to God. In the story, David and his dad talk about prayer, and how it can be meaningful for individuals. Each chapter includes watercolor illustrations of David and Ilana's family. This well-crafted guide covers many of the abc's (sorry, couldn't help myself....) of children's book collecting. First, it provides the basics - condition, dust jackets, how to navigate the online, dealer, and book fair venues. The chapters are chronological, but also included are full chapters on the superstar authors and illustrators in this domain: Garth Williams, Dr. Seuss, and Maurice Sendak. The complete lists of Newberry Medal winners (author's award) and the Caldecott Medal winners (illustrator's award) are also included. The authors, noted antique expert Noah Fleisher and his wife Lauren Zittle, a serious collector, have also added in a few lists of their favorites. One last comment - how many books on children's literature do I have? Well, I've lost count - but I had to have a copy of this one, too. Well worth having!

We found this book fascinating. We knew nothing of its true story - Squanto is a native American who was friendly with the English explorers but was later captured and sold as a slave in Spain. He made his way to England, learned the language, and was later able to return to his home as a guide and translator for the English settlers. Every other page in the book is a colorful, handsome full-page illustration. This book is recommended for ages 6-12, but honestly, we think adults will also find this book educational and interesting, as we did - it does not read solely as a children's book.

Lovely copy of the well-known Japanese illustrator's delightful alphabet book. Each letter gets a full treatment: each letter appears constructed of wood, each letter has some twist in perspective, each has a charming illustration on the facing page, and both pages of each letter have a pen and ink border, with hidden objects, and often these objects start with the same letter - if you think about it (iguanas, doves, quince). What a wonderful book to entertain not only children, but also adults who will be peering at the perspectives and looking for those objects in the borders, as they read it aloud dozens of times to said children! See the photos of the inventive and charming illustrations, in such appealing colors. It is very hard to find such an excellent copy of this classic, especially with such a near-flawless dust jacket. The book is fine, and the DJ is near fine. The DJ is not price-clipped, and it has has no tears. The book has no inscriptions of any kind, and no bookplates. The DJ is very slightly age darkened at the edges, with one crinkled area near the top of the DJ, as seen in the photos. A scarce copy in such good condition.

Carl must be the most patient and good-natured Rottweiler ever. Throughout the series of Good Dog, Carl picture books (though they don’t all include that exact phrase in their titles), Carl winds up caring for young Madeleine while her mother is away, becoming a full-bore nanny (though we’re never sure how much the mother realizes this), keeping her fed and safe from impending disasters and putting up with indignities like being ridden like a horse and being forced to wear birthday hats. In this book, toddler Madeleine goes to visit her local daycare center, where the children are just a little bit older than her, and inadvertently locks the teacher outside. Like the other books, there are virtually no words, only an introductory and closing sentence, and Day lets her watercolors and the reader’s (and listener’s) imaginations tell the story. Though it’s a perfect book for bedtime reading, you may want to keep this copy away from sticky fingers—it’s pristine new first edition, a flawless collector's copy.

This is not your typical modern early reader book. No, this was written specifically for the children of the Sioux nation, and is bilingual, with the English text on one side of the page and the Dakota text on the other. It was released by what was then called the U.S. Office of Indian Affairs, as part of a series of what was termed “Indian life readers.” The Grass Mountain Mouse tells the story of a young female mouse—who somehow combines characteristics of both a realistic field mouse and a realistic 20th-century Sioux—who lives a dutiful life until she goes to the rodeo. After that…all bets are off! Now she wants to be a rodeo cowboy! The story is by Ann Clark, who started writing children’s books while working as a teacher in a one-room New Mexico schoolhouse; eventually, she wrote 40 books, 31 of them about Native culture, and won both the Newberry Medal and the a Caldecott Honor Book Award. The book is filled with drawings by Ogalala Sioux artist Andrew Standing Soldier, who grew up and learned to draw on the Pine Ridge reservation and who illustrated a number of other children’s books for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and at least one other book with Clark. The Grass Mountain Mouse has been re-released several times, once by the B.I.A., once by a Lakota publisher, and recently by a print-on-demand publisher. This copy, though, is one of the 1943 originals.

Comments: Randall Jarrell was an award-winning poet who sometimes wrote children’s books. Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children’s author and illustrator who sometimes created adult projects. In 1964, they thought it made sense to work on something together. The result was “The Bat-Poet,” a slim volume of prose and poetry and pictures that’s not quite a picture book yet definitely has children in mind. It tells the story of a bat—quite realistically depicted by Sendak—who decides not to move from his roost on the porch to the barn with his fellows when the autumn comes, just because. While he’s there, on his own, he befriends a mockingbird and decides he wants to sing like him. What the mockingbird teaches him, of course, is how to write poetry—his own, not an imitation of anyone else’s. Learning how to do that is what eventually entices the little bat to rejoin the others in the barn, because, as the New York Times critic of wrote when it “The Bat-Poet” was first published: “Since it is the purpose of his poetry to tell them about themselves he cannot be separated from them forever or he would become unreal and shallow.” And make no mistake, this little bat is a real bat, not simply a human in allegorical form—he hangs from the rafters, he hunts flying insects, he hibernates…he’s just as much a bat as his mockingbird tutor is a mockingbird and the chipmunk critic is a chipmunk. Sendak’s beautiful black-and-white drawings show all these animals, and their surroundings, in great detail, and they come in all kinds of sizes, from small pictures of the small bat doing bat things in the top corners of the pages up to a two-page spread of the bat flying through a craggy forest in the moonlight.
Our copy of the book is in top-notch condition, with no visible flaws whatsoever. It is bound in brown cloth with the title, the author and illustrator’s names, and the publisher stamped in gilt on the spine. Blind stamping forms a beveled frame on both the front and back covers, and more blind stamping within that frame on the front features ovely botanic decoration forming a half-wreath along the bottom and sides. The end papers are light brown and the text block pages are off white. There are no marks, tears, or any other flaws on the pages and the text block is tight and square with no missing or loose pages. The front cover of the dust jacket features a Sendak drawing of the bat flying through the trees that is actually not included in the illustrations within the book—it stands on its own. However, the dust jacket has done its primary job over the years of protecting the book itself and shows it, with some tears and signs of aging. There is a tiny closed tear at the bottom front edge and slightly larger ones at the top edge near the spine and at the bottom of the spine. A diagonal two-inch rip extends from the top back of the spine to the left. Finally, there is a chip at the bottom quarter of the spine of the dust jacket. The dust jacket also shows tanning along the spine, and to a much lesser degree along the top edge. The jacket is unclipped but does not have a price printed on the book flaps. The number 74762 appears on the bottom inner corner of the front flap. This is a first edition, with “Second printing—1965” noted on the copyright page.
