Comments: Two volumes of popular American history, published by the magazine that defines that field--American Heritage Magazine. The first, "American Testament," serves as an excellent reference book, simply being a series of fifty important documents in American history, printed in chronological order, starting with Ferdinand and Isabella's letter commissioning Christopher Columbus in 1492 and ending with Martin Lither King's "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, with the amendments to the Constitution, starting with the Bill of Rights, thrown in for good measure. The second book, "The American Heritage History of the Congress of the United States," is just what it says in the title, a full history of the institution , in all its glory and messiness, with tons of illustrations. It starts with the day the very first Congress was convened in 1789 through the post-Watergate investigations of the 1970s, conducted just before this volume's publication in 1975. "American Testament" was originally published in 1971, and both volumes in this set appear to be new, but it is difficult to tell when the deluxe slipcase edition, with the two together, was released, though it is obvious that the slipcase was specifically designed with these two differently-sized volumes in mind. The gilt lettering on the spine of "History of the Congress..." has faded somewhat, but otherwise, the books themselves are in pristine condition, with the American Heritage eagle logo embossed on the cover of each. The slipcase has a full-cover image of the famous American eagle national coat-of-arms on one side. It shows a bit of shelf wear but is otherwise in good shape. See our photos.

The Garnier Frères publishing house produced many versions of Molière’s collected works over the years after it was established in 1833. This one, published in 1921, is a three-volume set, quarter-bound in dark-red morocco over red marbled boards, with contrasting green marbled endpapers. The spine has five false raised bands, each with a line of gold tooling, and the title and volume number is tooled in gold in two sections between the first and second bands; gold tooled floral decorations are in each of the other sections. There are a few penciled notes in volumes one and two, but otherwise the pages are remarkable free of marks, stains and tears for books of this age. The bindings show shelf wear on all edges and bumping on the corners, but are tight and hold the pages quite well. Each volume is between 500 and 600 pages. These are good reading copies that will look very nice on any shelf.

Bound in what appears to be tanned-colored calfskin, with some extraordinary decoration on the front cover and spine, a combination of gold tooling, embossing, and contrasting dye work using Celtic motifs. Because the book was originally serialized, and Hardy’s original work challenged popular morality at the time, it was published in several revised editions. This is a copy of the “Wessex Edition,” released in 1912, which was Hardy’s final say on the matter, and includes prefaces Hardy wrote to the first and three later editions, including the 1912 one. Top edges are gilt. There is some water staining on the side edges, but none of it goes through to the interior. Overall, the pages are quite clean and bright, though a couple of pages have small marks in the margins that do not interfere with the text. The bottom corners are bumped. The top edge of the spine is slightly chipped and there is a quarter-inch closed tear along the top hinge of the front cover; this does not continue inside, where the hinges are intact. 8v, 516 pages. The book includes a map of Hardy’s Wessex at the end.

He was one of the best selling authors of the late 19th/early 20th century. His reputation declined after his death in 1935 but has been reevaluated in recent years. Yet this book, "The Old Wives' Tale," originally published in 1908, which follows the lives of two very different sisters from their youth into old age, has always been considered one of his very best works, even by his critics. This is a particularly lovely edition, and in excellent condition. The cover has a floral pattern reminiscent of William Morris. There are full-page color drawings throughout, as well as half-page black-and-white drawings at the beginning of every chapter. The text block is tight and there are no marks, creases, or tears on the pages. The only damage is slight, where what appears to have been a book plate was removed from the inside of the back cover. There is a bit of confusion within the industry about the copyright date: The Heritage Press was originally created as the Limited Editions Club by George Macy to produce fine editions of reprints of classic works. By the time this work was published, Macy had dropped the "limited editions" part of its remit and changed the imprint's name but the fineness of the books it published remained. The book itself says the Macy copyrighted the book in 1940, but the Library of Congress, acknowledging that in its catalog, says the Heritage Press published it in1947.
