We like David Foster Wallace’s oft-quoted assessment of good non-fiction: “…watch somebody reasonably bright but also reasonably average pay far closer attention and think at far more length about all sorts of different stuff than most of us have a chance to in our daily lives.”

Comments: Two volumes of popular American history, published by the magazine that defines that field--American Heritage Magazine. The first, "American Testament," serves as an excellent reference book, simply being a series of fifty important documents in American history, printed in chronological order, starting with Ferdinand and Isabella's letter commissioning Christopher Columbus in 1492 and ending with Martin Lither King's "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963, with the amendments to the Constitution, starting with the Bill of Rights, thrown in for good measure. The second book, "The American Heritage History of the Congress of the United States," is just what it says in the title, a full history of the institution , in all its glory and messiness, with tons of illustrations. It starts with the day the very first Congress was convened in 1789 through the post-Watergate investigations of the 1970s, conducted just before this volume's publication in 1975. "American Testament" was originally published in 1971, and both volumes in this set appear to be new, but it is difficult to tell when the deluxe slipcase edition, with the two together, was released, though it is obvious that the slipcase was specifically designed with these two differently-sized volumes in mind. The gilt lettering on the spine of "History of the Congress..." has faded somewhat, but otherwise, the books themselves are in pristine condition, with the American Heritage eagle logo embossed on the cover of each. The slipcase has a full-cover image of the famous American eagle national coat-of-arms on one side. It shows a bit of shelf wear but is otherwise in good shape. See our photos.

Comments: A very good book, in all senses of the phrase, for the true Leica enthusiast and collector. “Leica Literature: 1930-1960” is not a catalogue of Leica cameras or lenses or other optical equipment, or even exactly a catalog of what is suggested by the title—literature by and about Leica—but instead actual reprints of a large selection of pamphlets, leaflets, and brochures published by the company that produced Leicas about its products. Though most of the items are in English, a fair few are in the original German when the English versions could not be located. Most appear in their original form, but a few have been reconstructed, summarized, or otherwise modified for publication in this book, according to the author, James L. Lager, who occasionally added comments for clarification. Lager divided the material into three categories: lenses, cameras, and accessories. Though some of the publications appear to be advertisements or other promotional materials, there are also many original instructional manuals that could prove quite helpful to collectors who would wish to to use some of the objects now sitting on their shelves.
This copy is not only a first edition, it is identified as a first printing on its copyright page. It is a paperback without a dust jacket, as it was originally issued. The binding is tight and square and the pages are perfectly clean and clear, with no markings or even signs of aging. There are signs of binding glue along both the front and back hinges, but those hinges are solid with no tearing or separation from the text block. There is a crease at the upper right corner of the front cover where the corner was turned down at some point but the corner itself is sound and the crease is not easily detected. The spine shows considerable sun damage and there is a small tear at its base. See our pictures.

This handsome, well-made volume has an interesting backstory. Lakeside Press, founded in 1864, has long prided itself on producing high quality publications. Earlier in its history, Lakeside was a publisher of the Encyclopedia Brittanica, the Sears catalog, Time, and Life. Lakeside Classics, of which this volume is one, is a series began in 1903 to reprint neglected classics, particularly those based on American history. By 2015, there were 113 volumes. The most interesting fact about Lakeside Classics is that they were never sold! The current year's volume was/is given to employees and friends of the publishing house each year at Christmas. Due to their quality and their origin, Lakeside Classics are collectible. This work is #87 in the series, and includes two memoirs of westward expansion: the first is by Applegate, an American pioneer who led a large group of settlers to Oregon (and established an alternate route) and later became an influential member of Oregon's early government; the second memoir by Porter describes her and her husband's two thousand mile journey from Missouri to California; neither of them had any relevant experience to prepare them for such a trek, and she was pregnant with their second child. Quite the treatise on American perseverance.

This slim volume, no longer in print, is part of Cambridge University Press’ Fitzwilliam Museum Handbooks series, which the publisher says is “intended to provide a convenient and accessible introduction to subjects within the applied arts….[d]rawing examples from the world-famous collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.” In this case, the examples are an incredible selection of samplers created from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. The photography in this book is stellar, not to mention the needlework on display. The book was written by Carol Humphrey, Honorary Keeper of Textiles for the Fitzwilliam and author of several other books on historical needlework, and her signature appears on the title page. A favorite since its publication by scholars and crafters alike.

Though there are a good number of recipes in Food for Better Living, it’s not a cookbook. Instead, it’s a home economics text book for high school students, one that was apparently considered so useful that it went through three American editions and ended in a Canadian edition in 1968, according to WorldCat. Our copy is apparently the teacher’s edition, with such clues as a list of class activities at the end of each chapter and a “List of Audio-Visual Aids” at the end of the book. The authors state in their preface that they assume students are much more interested in food itself than in the principals of nutrition and preparation, so they organized the book first by what were considered the “seven food groups” when the book was first published in 1949, slipping in such information as why Vitamin C is good for you in the citrus section and why some cuts of meat are more tender than others in the protein section. The book then goes on to chapters about how to put these individual foods and recipes together into meals, and from there how to shop for food, how to store it, and how to entertain. The book is loaded with black and white pictures (and a couple of color ones) of everything from groceries to how to put out a stovetop fire to modern breakfast nooks. Though some of the scientific information may be out of date, there really is some useful information here, as well as a lot of stuff that any social historian would love.

Comments: In one volume, Frederic Morton follows the Rothschild clan across the centuries and across Europe, starting with Mayer Amschel Rothschild in the Frankfurt ghetto of the 18th century and ending with the London jet set of the late 1950s and early 1960s, with stops with Napoleon's secret police, at the Suez Canal, and in one Heinrich Himmer's prison cell's along the way. If you're going to cover so much territory, it's helpful to have visual aids, which this book does--38 illustrations in halftone, and a large fold-out genealogical table. It's also good that Morton was known as much as a novelist and could approach his subject with a novelist's flair. The text block of this copy is in pristine condition with no marks, creases, or tears. There is some light bumping in the bottom corners but otherwise in fine shape.
