Oedipus the King
Oedipus the King
$50.00
by Sophocles; Storr, Francis, Wilder, Thornton
Illustrations/Photography by: Galanis, Demetrios
Published by The Heritage Press
Binding: Hardback
Condition: New
Comments: The classic Greek play, in a wonderfully elegant edition (as The Heritage Press consistently produces), and a copy that appears to be new. The Greek text appears on the verso pages with an English verse translation by Francis Storr on the facing recto pages. Two-tone wood engravings, some full-page, that both illustrated specific characters and incidents from the play and more general classical themes, are scattered throughout. An essay by American playwright Thornton Wilder introduces the whole thing. There is no copyright in the book itself or even in its Library of Congress catalog entry, but the original illustrations by Demetrios Galanis, archived at the University of Texas, are dated 1955. The Heritage Press appears to have released several different editions of "Oedipus the King"--this one has a black cloth binding with a rectangular gilt embossed image of two facing Greek (not Egyptian) sphinxes in a gold slipcase. This is the by far the best copy we've seen on the market. See our photos.
