Comments: A small book—only 24 unpaginated pages—serving as the catalog for a small yet important exhibition. Boris Aronson started designing theater sets revolutionary Russia and then Germany, working in the new Constructivist style, before moving to New York in 1923. He started out in the more adventurous Jewish theaters of the city’s Lower East Side but by 1932 he was working on Broadway. By the end of his life, in 1980, he had won six Tony Awards for scenic design, had designed sets for not only major theater productions of such plays as “The Crucible,” “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Cabaret,” and “Fiddler on the Roof,” but he had become great friends with the painter Marc Chagall (whose work inspired some of his designs) and worked closely with composer Kurt Weill, director Harold Prince, and dancer/choreographer Mikhail Baryshnikov. New York Times theater critic Frank Rich not only served as curator for this exhibition, he also thought Aronson so important that he co-wrote a biography of him two years before this exhibition of his drawings, paintings, photographs, and models with Aronson’s widow, Lisa Jalowetz Aronson. An extended piece by Rich about Aronson also starts off this catalog.
Fourteen images of designs appear in this catalog in addition to the design on the cover; eleven of them are in full color and twelve of them are full page. Although this book is new, it does show signs of shelf wear on the front cover, particularly at the spine. There some cosmetic damage to the upper right corner of the cover and faint smudging upper corners of several other pages. However, there is no damage to the images themselves—they are prinstine. The pages are clean, bright, and besides the staining the the corners, unmarked. No pages are loose or missing. See our photos for details.

Comments: Jim Thompson lived a fascinating life. Born in Delaware, the son of a textile manufacturer, he became a 1928 Olympian in the sport of sailing. During World War II he served as a spy in the United States Office of Strategic Services, which brought him to Thailand. After moving to Thailand, he founded the Thai Silk Company Limited, helping to revitalize the Thai silk industry. Later, in 1967, Thompson mysteriously disappeared in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, was never found, and was presumed dead in 1974. While in Thailand, Thompson was not only a businessman but a collector of Southeast Asian art. Beginning in 1958, Thompson designed and built "The House on the Klong" a traditional Thai-style house sitting on a canal, to house his extraordinary art collection. The house, still open as a museum today, is an impressive collection of art and architecture. This gorgeous book, filled with color photographs including many full plates, tells the story of the house - detailing its origins and Thompson's process in creating it, then describing in illustrated detail the architecture of the house and the art collection itself. With page after page of beautiful photos of Southeast Asian art and of the impressive house, this book tells an intriguing story about the passion project of an extraordinary man. Colorful pages introduce each section and provide a short description of each song, explaining the legend behind Carol of the Bells and telling the story of Bing Crosby's I'll Be Home for Christmas being broadcast into outer space in 1965. The sheet music for each song is accompanied by a stylized title and illustration, making the book fun for onlookers as the songs are played. Also enclosed in this copy is an extra lyric booklet, "All the Words to All the Songs in The Reader's Digest Merry Christmas Songbook." An attractive and festive book for celebrating Christmas.

The book begins with over 30 pages of basics on both knitting and crocheting, introducing the beginner crafter to techniques, vocabulary, and helpful tips. Then come the projects: from the traditional Patchwork to the pretty White Aran to the striped and textured Jewel Lap Blanket. Each pattern is more beautiful than the last, and Linsley's instructions are easy and fun to follow.

Barbara and Martin Rizek, authors of this book, were fixtures in their Financial District neighborhood. The book provides a look into its history. It is full of archival photos of the neighborhood, each chapter with a different focus: Neighborhood Life; Stores; Culture; Religious Life; Community Services and Education; The Last Days of the Neighborhood; and The World Trade Center. Comments: Fine. One of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts' excellent publications. Queen Mersyankh III was the daughter of Hetepheres II and Prince Kawab, and wife of King Khafre. (The name Mersyankh is often transcribed as "the Living One loves her," but now, the version Meresankh, "she loves life" has been almost universally adopted.) Her tomb was discovered in 1927 by George Reisner, with further excavations undertaken by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Harvard University. The Museum holds a statue from her tomb of Queen Hetepheres embracing her late daughter Meresankh. The first volume of the Giza Mastabas Series. Pristine throughout. Not only an architect, Voysey was also a furniture and textile designer of wallpaper, fabrics, and furnishings in the Arts and Crafts style. Very nice copy of the first edition of this important and scholarly work on the history of cameos. (A total of 18 editions were published between 1900 and 1975, and this first edition was the subject of an enthusiastic and detailed article in the May 11, 1901 edition of The Saturday Review, which is available online). Twelve full color illustrations and dozens of monochrome images. A standout is the head of Medusa rendered in amethyst. Contents include materials and processes of cutting, early cameos and glass pastes, Greco-Roman and medieval cameos, and Renaissance and later cameos.

Lovely copy of the well-known Japanese illustrator's delightful alphabet book. Each letter gets a full treatment: each letter appears constructed of wood, each letter has some twist in perspective, each has a charming illustration on the facing page, and both pages of each letter have a pen and ink border, with hidden objects, and often these objects start with the same letter - if you think about it (iguanas, doves, quince). What a wonderful book to entertain not only children, but also adults who will be peering at the perspectives and looking for those objects in the borders, as they read it aloud dozens of times to said children! See the photos of the inventive and charming illustrations, in such appealing colors. It is very hard to find such an excellent copy of this classic, especially with such a near-flawless dust jacket. The book is fine, and the DJ is near fine. The DJ is not price-clipped, and it has has no tears. The book has no inscriptions of any kind, and no bookplates. Thaxter was a popular and respected poet, essayist, and journalist of the late 19th century who spent her life, from childhood, among the New England literati, mostly in the community that gathered around her father’s hotel on Appledore Island off the coast of Maine. By the time she took over the hotel, the community had expanded to include artists like Hassam, one of America’s premier impressionist painters, who produced some of his best work in her flower garden. This is their collaboration, full of lyrical prose and practical gardening advice and bursting with Hassam’s watercolors, not to mention the classic arts-and-crafts green-and-gold binding.

Comments: Scarce in first edition hardcover. Muensterberger was a practicing psychoanalyst and expert in ethnographic art. He believed that, together, his psychoanalytic and anthropological work would lead to a "deeper comprehension of the essential nature of man." This work is purported to be the first psychological examination of the emotional sources of the drive to collect. After two chapters on the antecedents of the passion for collecting, Muensterberger treats us to discussions ranging across the greats of collectors, including Petrarch, Catherine the Great, and Sir Thomas Phillipps, who clearly stated that he wanted one copy of every book in the world (a book collection that has resulted in over 60 sales by Sotheby's over the years). From the book jacket: "In an easy conversational style, the author discusses the eccentricities of heads of state, literary figures, artists, and psychoanalytic patients, all possessed by a need for magic relief from despair and helplessness - and for the self-healing implied in the phrase "I can't live without it!"
