The Old Man and the Sea
The Old Man and the Sea
$200.00
by Hemingway, Ernest
Illustrations/Photography by: Schwartz, Daniel
Published in Text, 1952; Special content, 1975 by The Franklin Library, Franklin Center, Pa.
Edition: First
Binding: Hardback
Condition: Near Fine
Comments: As is typical of the limited editions produced by the Franklin Library, this book is pure elegance. The binding is blue leather with gold stamping; the papers are made of moire fabric rather than of paper itself; all the page ends (not just the tops) are gilded; and there is a wide bound-in ribbon book mark. More than that, the book is copiously illustrated with black and wash ink wash paintings, and includes a color copy of a portrait of Ernest Hemingway, painted by his friend Waldo Pierce in the 1920s. The portrait is tipped in on the page before the title page, covered with a bound-in page of onion skin. According to the caption, the original was a favorite of Hemingway's and hung in the house of his widow, who made it available for reproduction for the first time for use in this book. The text block of this copy is very tight, so much so that it has the feel of a book that has never been read. There are no marks, tears, or folds on the pages. The spine has four raised bands with gold stamped decoration at the top and bottom with the author, title, and publisher stamped in gold in between. Both the front and back covers have gold stamped lines forming a border, with a gold stamped lines forming a frame for a gold stamped image of a marlin leaping out of the ocean. There is some slight rubbing on the bottom edges of both covers and on all corners, as well as on a few spots of the spine, but otherwise, this copy would be classified "as new." A welcome addition to any Hemingway or Franklin Library collection. See our photos.
