Comments: Billy Collins is commonly believed to be one of the greatest American poets of his age. When “The Apple that Astonished Paris,” his third book of poetry, was reissued in 2006, the British critic Jay Parini wrote in “The Guardian,” “This man writes beautifully, with natural charm and good sense. He’s witty and imaginative, and his language is memorably cadenced, figurative, and fresh. What’s not to like?” Collins is known not only for his accessibility but for his wit: after serving as the U.S. Poet Laureate from 2001 to 2003, he was the first recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Mark Twain Award for humorous poetry. He’s won innumerable other awards as well, but he has also done TED Talks, filled in for Garrison Keillor on his popular radio program, “The Writer's Almanac,” and toured with singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, partly for the fun of it, partly to help popularize poetry in general. As Parini said, what’s not to like?

Our copy of “The Apple that Astonished Paris” is a first edition of the paperback release, which was published simultaneously with the hardback edition, in 1988 by the University of Arkansas Press. It is in flawless condition, with tight covers, and obviously unread. See our photos.
